Ashdown Park Hotel: A weekend getaway in Sussex

Isn’t it great when your partner gets it spot on with the presents?! Well this year my Mr surprised me with a weekend spa break for a belated Christmas present, and what a brilliant stay it was! There really isn’t a better way to beat the January Blues than a relaxing weekend filled with pampering, delicious food, amazing service and stunning scenery.

Driving through the stunning Ashdown Forest in the snow – a crisp weekend, clear roads but still snow visible on the trees (… so sad I didn’t capture any pictures!). We turned into the Ashdown Park Hotel, a 4* luxurious country house hotel, set at the heart of 186 acres of stunning gardens and parkland. The long driveway swoops round and you arrive with an impressive view of the hotel.

First stop on arrival was of course to check out the bedroom. We got a free upgrade to a recently refurbished executive suite in the East Wing with huge sash windows that let gleams of light through, a huge king size bed and deep bath. Just off the reception, it ensures complete privacy and no noise could be heard from the main hotel.

Next we of course had to head over to the Country Club, which has a fantastic Spa, Golf Course and Tennis facilities. Due to the cold weather we headed straight to the spa and was given cosy dressing gowns, slippers and fresh towels. The indoor heated pool is perfect for a dip and long enough for a proper swim if desired. The best part for me has to be the hot hot hot (!) jacuzzi. Perhaps the only downside was that the steam and sauna rooms were separate for male and female, it would have been nice to do this with my Mr, but not the end of the world by any means. The Spa facilities are free to use for guests staying at the hotel and you don’t need to book to use the pool.

My Mr had also booked me in for a refreshing facial. Their products are fantastic – I had a mud steam, followed with a moisturising facial with the use of raspberry extract which just smelt fantastic. There is a shop downstairs where you could have bought their product but I decided against it being January and all! It was however, probably one of the best facials I’ve ever been lucky enough to experience. The professionalism and advice given was spot on – I’d highly recommend.

We had decided to book in for dinner with an 8:30pm reservation and had heard rumours of a cocktail bar within the hotel – and it didn’t disappoint! For dinner we chose not to go for the A La Carte menu and instead went for the deliciously mouthwatering Chateaubriand – a special treat for us both! The host recommended an Argentinian Malbec which went together perfectly. For desert we shared the Apple Pannacotta, which came with a small amount of ginger cake and fruits – just delicious!

Would we stay again? Without hesitation, 100% yes!

Highlight of the trip? The facial was so relaxing. My Mr would say the food!

Top tips when visiting Ashdown Park Hotel:

  1. Ensure you book for dinner and spa treatments in advance – the restaurant on the Saturday night was very busy and I doubt you’ll be able to get a reservation easily on the day of arrival.
  2. Go wild and try their Chateaubriand – the meat was unbelievably tender, team with an Argentinian Malbec.
  3. Head down for dinner a bit earlier and enjoy the range of cocktails in the cocktail bar – a huge menu – impossible for them to not have your favourite!
  4. Leave some time to explore the surrounding area – this is something we didn’t have time for but feel the Ashdown Forests would have been fantastic to walk through.
  5. Enjoy the spa – there is a lounge area to sit and relax with a glass of vino perhaps?! Enjoy!

Do you have any good recommendations for weekend breaks in the UK? I’d love to hear where you’ve been and where you’d recommend 🙂
